"African American history is culturally rich and important to our state. We need to do a better job of recognizing this. The mixing of the two cultures made our state what it is."

Members of the South Carolina African American Heritage Commission join citizens throughout our state and the entire nation in celebrating and honoring those who lost their lives at the historic Mother Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston on June 17, 2015.

To all family members and friends, we extend our condolences and prayers to you, and we stand ready to assist you in any way that you may need. May you take comfort in knowing that your loved ones answered a higher calling and left a remarkable legacy of service to God and their communities.

The memories of the "Emanuel Nine" will forever live in the hearts and minds of those who knew and loved them and those who are forever impacted by what transpired in an historic sacred space that has witnessed triumph and adversity.

Events over the past week at Mother Emanuel, in Charleston, and throughout our nation provide poignant reminders of why an honest and complete history of our state is vitally important as we look to heal and move forward. The South Carolina African American Heritage Commission remains committed to fostering this needed dialogue and to preserving and documenting the diverse heritages throughout the Palmetto State.

May God continue to bless our state with strength, resilience, peace, and understanding.

Our mission.... is to support the efforts of the South Carolina African American Heritage Commission to identify and promote the preservation of historic sites, structures, buildings, and culture of the African American experience in South Carolina, and to assist and enhance the efforts of the South Carolina Department of Archives and History.
